RESOLUTION NO. 03-100
A RESOLUTION NAMING THE NEW BOAT
LAUNCH LOCATED AT LITTLE JIM
BRIDGE ON NORTH HUTCHINSON ISLAND
AS THE "STAN BLUM MEMORIAL BOAT
LAUNCH" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY,
FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has
made the following determinations:
1. Mr. Stan Blum was born on August 16, 1915 in New York City. He grew up six
blocks from the Atlantic Ocean, and at the age of four, got hooked on fishing after his
family helped him cast into the ocean for the first time.
2. In 1935, Stan Blum graduated from Columbia University and joined the Navy in
1941. He served as a Lieutenant Commander in World War II in the North Atlantic and
Pacific Theaters of Operations.
3. After World War II, Mr. Blum started his own business producing Vitamin A
from fish, and was involved in the fish by-products' business for years.
4. Mr. Blum began visiting St. Lucie County in the late 1940's to go big-game
fishing with friends, and bought property in the 1960's on North Hutchinson Island with his
wife, Jody, and daughters Charlotte and Joni.
5. During his years in St. Lucie County, Mr. Blum contributed countless hours to
the Conservation Alliance, Fort Pierce Sport Fishing Club, and other organizations and
committees. Because of his work, the first ships were obtained and sunk off our coast to
serve as fish habitat. He was also one of the key organizers for the Save Our Sea Life
Constitutional Amendment that banned inshore netting. For these reasons the St. Lucie County
Conservation Alliance chose him as its "Conservationist of the Year" in 1994.
6. Mr. Blum was recognized as a National Expert on fisheries management as well. He
served on the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission and his work led to the banning of
deadly ocean drift fishing nets. In 1992, Mr. Blum was one of ten people within the United
States chosen to receive one of the nation's most prestigious Marine Conservation Awards, the
"Chevron Conservation Award".
7. It is fitting to name the new boat launch at Little Jim Bridge on North
Hutchinson Island after Mr. Stan Blum because of his contributions to marine conservation
and because, as a good friend puts it, "Four times a week he passed through the Little Jim
Bridge on his way offshore to fish ... he loved Ft. Pierce like a native ... this is where his
soul is".
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners
of St. Lucie County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby name the new boat launch area located at Little Jim
Bridge on North Hutchinson Island, as the "STAN BLUM MEMORIAL BOAT LAUNCH"
in St. Lucie County, Florida.
2. This Board urges the citizens of St. Lucie County, Florida to enjoy the many
pleasures available in St. Lucie County, due to the tremendous dedication and earnest efforts
of Mr. Stan Blum.
