HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-218 ~y: At(rn;n . ~.Svc.:) 1Y\f13 fin. 'kk RESOLUTION NO. 03- 218 A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER, 2003 AS "LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA AWARENESS MONTH" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. Blood-related cancers currently afflict more than 700,000 Americans, with an estimated 110,000 new cases diagnosed each year. 2. Leukemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma will kill an estimated 60,500 people in the United States this year. 3. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, through voluntary contributions, is dedicated to finding cures for these diseases through research efforts and the support for those that suffer from them. 4. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society maintains an office in Indian River County to support patients with these diseases and their family members in the State of Florida. 5. Last year, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society provided Thirty-Six Million Dollars in research funding for blood-related cancers, and nearly Seventy-Six Cents of every dollar spent by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is used to support patient services, education and research activities. 6. St. Lucie County is similarly committed to the eradication of these diseases and supports the treatment of its citizens afflicted with them, and encourages private efforts to enhance research funding and education programs to address these diseases. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby proclaim the month of September, 2003, as "LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA AWARENESS MONTH" in St. Lucie County, Florida. 2. This Board urges the citizens of St. Lucie County to participate in voluntary activities to support education programs and the funding of research programs to find a cure for blood related cancers.
