A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH
OF MAY, 2004, AS "ST. LUCIE COUNTY
LIBRARY'S GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has
made the following determinations:
1. In 1903 the first "Reading Room" was set up in the Community Hall on
South Indian River Drive (now where the H D King Generating Station operates).
2. The second "Reading Room" was held in the Cobb Building at the foot
of Avenue A in Fort Pierce 1913 - 1950. The Women's Club housed and operated
the "Reading Room" in their newly built club.
3. In 1950, the "Reading Room" was moved to an old house in the 7th Street
Park owned by the City of Fort Pierce; and the St. Lucie County Library Association
was founded in 1946.
4. Ground was broken in 1952 for a new building on land given by the City
of Fort Pierce to the Library Association. The Library was dedicated in 1953 but
officially opened on May 1, 1954. This was the first "county supported" library
in the state.
5. The State Library of Florida loaned 2,000 books to the library to help
develop the opening day collection. Book donations and cash were accepted at
the ground opening.
6. In 1958 a "Stack Room" was added to the building; bookmobile service
began; and the Library Association entered into an agreement with Okeechobee
C. ounty to form a regional library system.
7. In 1967 "Big Addition" to the Library cost $111,000, and the cost was
shared by the City of Fort Pierce, St. Lucie County and the St. Lucie County Library
Association.
8. In December 1970 Lincoln Park Community Library opened~ and one year
later Port St. Lucie Branch Library opened. In September, 1977 the Regional Library
ceased to exist and the Library became a part of County government.
9. In September, 1989 Lakewood Park Branch Library opened~ and in
December 1991, Zora Neale Hurston Branch Library opened.
10. In January 1993, Morningside Branch Library opened and in September,
1995 St. Lucie West Library Cooperative opened. In June, 1999, the New Fort Pierce
Branch Library opened; and the old Main Library building was transferred back to
the City of Fort Pierce.
11. The Library System in St. Lucie County has always been one of partnership,
collaboration and community involvement. The Woman's club started the
partnership with a building in the early 1900's. The City of Fort Pierce, City of Port St.
Lucie, General Development Corporation, Friends of the St. Lucie County Library,
St. Lucie County Library Association, St. Lucie County School Board and the St. Lucie
County Board of County Commissioners all have had an active part in making the
library system grow to the level it has now become by purchasing land, furnishings,
equipment, and funding personnel and operating expenses.
12. This Board should recognize the contributions the St. Lucie County Library
System has made to the community and congratulate the Library on their Golden
Anniversary.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of
St. Lucie County, Florida:
1. This Board congratulates all of the individuals who, over the years, have
had the insight to create and enlarge our library system for the benefit of the
citizens of St. Lucie County.
2. This Board does hereby proclaim the month of May, 2004, as "ST, LUCIE
COUNTY LIBRARY'S GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY".
