HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-159 ~~. e.SD mm (tdffl ~1e, RESOLUTION NO. 05- 159 A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF APRIL, 2005, AS "SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board ot County Commissioners of Sf. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. A healthy and productive community is essential to Sf. Lucie County's ability to successfully promote and protect the health and safety of all its citizens. An unhealthy lifestyle by Sf. Lucie County residents can erode our most important asset, our community. 2, Sexually transmitted infections are preventable; cross geographic and socio-economic boundaries: and bring the potential for long-term negative health outcomes for individuals who go untreated, including infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, neurological damage, death, and the spread of infection to others. 3. In 2004, there were one hundred and three pregnant women in Sf. Lucie County diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection, In 2004. three percent of all infants in Florida were born to women who were diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection during their pregnancy. 4. The AIDS case rate in Sf. Lucie County is the second highest rate of Florida (41.3/100,000) , 5. The implementation of STD Awareness Month will provide educational activities which are designed to empower all residents and visitors in Sf. Lucie County to made educated and informed decisions regarding their behaviors that impact their health. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of SI. Lucie County, Florida: 1, This Board does hereby proclaim the month of April, 2005, as "STD AWARENESS MONTH" in SI. Lucie County, Florida. 2, This Board does hereby encourage all residents and visitors to set goals to improve their personal health and wellness by avoiding behaviors that may increase the risk for infection, and by becoming informed about sexually transmitted infections, methods of prevention, signs and symptoms, treatments available, and services available in the community as part of public health.
