RESOLUTION NO. 05-166
A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING APRIL 30.2005,
THROUGH MAY 7, 2005, AS "DROWNING
PREVENTION WEEK IN CONJUNCTION WITH
SAFE KIDS WEEK" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY,
FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida. has
made the following determinations:
1. Drowning is th leading cause of death for children age five or under, the
fourth leading cause of accidental death in the US and the second leading cause
of unintentional injury related deaths among children aged 15 or younger.
2. A swimming pool is 14 times more likely than a motor vehicle to be
involved in the death of a child. and for every child that drowns, four more are
hospitalized. Of those 15% die in the hospital and another 20% suffer severe or
permanent neurological disability.
3. Seven out of every ten preschoolers who drown are in the care of one or
both parents at the time of the event, and in three out of every four toddler
drowning incidents, a child was left unsupervised for less than five minutes.
4. Between the years 1997 and 2002, there was a 500% increase in the
number of annual drowning events in Sf. Lucie County.
5. The St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners recognizes that one
life lost to drowning is too many because "Drowning Is Preventable".
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of
St. Lucie County. Florida:
1. This Board does hereby proclaim April 30, 2005, through May 7, 2005, as
"DROWNING PREVENTION WEEK IN CONJUNCTION WITH SAFE KIDS WEEK" in St. Lucie
County, Florida.
2. This Board does hereby declare this time as the official beginning of a year
long county wide public awareness campaign designed to bring community
attention to the Sf. Lucie County Health Department's Drowning Prevention Initiative
and to empower residents and visitors to reduce and prevent the incidence of
drowning and near drowning events in st. Lucie County.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 19th day of April, 2005.
