RESOLUTION NO. 05-182
A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING SATURDAY,
MAY 14, 2005, AS "lORA NEALE HURSTON
DAY" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of Sf. Lucie County, Florida, has
made the following determinations:
1. The Sf. Lucie County Cultural Affairs Council has organized a three-day
festival - lore Fest! A Homecoming - to recognize the literary achievements of one
of St. Lucie County's most prominent citizens, the late award-winning author Zora
Neale Hurston.
2. The Cultural Council invites the community to celebrate Hurston's life and
her works by bringing her books, plays, folklore and anthropoligical works to the
attention of the public.
3. Hurston became known as the Queen of the Harlem Renaissance through
her writings and friendships with the many black writers, musicians, sociologists,
anthropologists and others, coming from the South to make their mark on a growing
black movement in the 1920's and 1930's.
4. Zora Neale Hurston came to Fort Pierce toward the end of her life at the
request of Fort Pierce Chronicle publisher C. E. Bolen and worked as a newspaper
reporter, and also taught school at Lincoln Park Academy, before suffering several
strokes that led to her death in January, 1960.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of
St. Lucie County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby proclaim Saturday, May 14,2005, as "ZORA NEALE
HURSTON DAY" to acknowledge this late author's contributions to literature and
other arts forms.
2. This Board encourages the citizens of St. Lucie County to learn more about
this profile writer by following her Zora Neale Hurston Dust Tracks Heritage Trail and
attending Zora Fest! A Homecoming on May
13, 2005 through May 15, 2005, at the Lincoln Park Academy and other venues.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this lOth day of May, 2005.
