RESOLUTION NO. 05-186
A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING JUNE 25,
2005, AS "PUERTO RICAN DAY" IN ST.
LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida,
has made the following determinations:
1. Puerto Rico is a self-governing island commonwealth of the United States
discovered by Christopher Columbus on November 19,1493, and ceded by Spain to the
United States in 1898, following the Spanish-American War.
2. On March 3,1917 the Jones Act was signed declaring that all Puerto Ricans
are citizens of the United States; and in 1952, commonwealth status was proclaimed
and has been upheld since the 1960's.
3. On November 19, 2005, Puerto Rico will celebrate the 512th year anniversary
of Christopher Columbus' discovery of the Island of Puerto Rico.
4. Saturday, June 25,2005, has been proclaimed Puerto Rican Day, and the
Puerto Rican Association for Hispanic Affairs, Inc., a non-profit cultural and
educational organization, will host the third annual Treasure Coast San Juan Festival
and Business Expo.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County
Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby proclaim June 25,2005, as "PUERTO RICAN DAY"
in St. Lucie County, Florida.
2. This Board encourages the citizens of St. Lucie County to attend the various
activities planned for Puerto Rican Day in St. Lucie County, Florida.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 14th day of June, 2005.
