HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-037 RESOLUTION NO. 06-037 A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING JANUARY 17,2006, AS "MIKE LEATHERWOOD DAY" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. Mike Leatherwood, the Dean of Florida Community College basketball coaches, is the winningest active coach in the state. By breaking the 628-wins record held by Milton Johnson of Chipola College, he has compiled a 631-327 record and coached ten division-winning squads. 2. Coach Leatherwood joined the Pioneer staff in 1970 as the youngest junior college head coach in the nation at age 22. His first team compiled a 21-9 record. 3. Mike Leatherwood began his basketball career at Pensacola High School as part of a team nicknamed the "Marvelous Midgets," as all the team members were shorter than 6'3". They won the Class 2A state championship in 1964. He then went on to play at the University of Florida where he was a two-year starter and an Academic All-Southeast Conference and Academic All- American while leading the Gators to the National Invitation Tournament. As a graduate assistant at the University of Florida, he coached the freshman team to impressive victories over Brevard and Lake City. 4. For 34 years, Coach Leatherwood has worked to make the IRCC men's basketball team competitive and leaders in the state. In 1975, he won the state junior college championship and finished second in 2002. His team has won at least 20 games for 14 seasons and many of his players have gone on to Division I schools. Additionally, he has touched the lives of hundreds ofSt. Lucie County and Treasure Coast students as their Physical Education instructor at IRCC. 5. Coach Leatherwood was honored in 1992 with induction into the Florida Community College Basketball Hall of Fame. In 1994, he was inducted into his high school's Sports Hall of Fame in Pensacola and was honored as an inductee into the St. Lucie County Sports Hall of Fame. 6. The St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners believes Coach Mike Leatherwood should be recognized for his outstanding achievements and continued dedication to the students and young adults of St. Lucie County. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby proclaim January 17,2006, as "MIKE LEATHERWOOD DAY" in St. Lucie County, Florida. 2. This Board, as well as the citizens of St. Lucie County, does hereby congratulate Coach Mike Leatherwood for his achievements, as well as his continued dedication to the students and young adults ofSt. Lucie County; and wishes Coach Leatherwood continued success in winning games for many years to come. The old adage, "Records are made to be broken" may be true, but this Board believes the record of Coach Leatherwood will stand for a long time to come.
