RESOLUTION NO. 06-091
A RESOLUTION "CONGRATULATING MOUNT MORIAH
PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH ON ITS 95th
ANNIVERSARY" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida, has made the following determinations:
1. In 1911, the Mount Moriah Primitive Baptist Church was
organized by Brother Tom Haywood, Brother Archie Sweet, Mother
Frances K. Sweet, Sister Annie Williams and Deacon Horace Williams.
They were among the founding members who held their meetings in an
old school room for which they paid a small fee.
2. The pastors were Elder S. C. Cromartie (1911 - 1921),
Elder G. S. Crawford (1921 - 1922), Elder O. T. Harrison (1921-
1928), Elder N. Smith (1928 - 1930), Elder N. B. Frazier (1930 _
1934), Elder T. R. Griffin (1934 - 1939), Elder W. M. Sanders (1939
- 1943), Elder A. Martin (1943 - 1944), Elder T. R. Griffin (1944 _
1960), Elder E. S. Bullard (1960 - 1971), Elder N. E. Rogers (1971
- 1973, Elder J. L. Canady (1973 - 1986), Elder S. L. Lawrence
(1986 - 1996), Elder R. L. Neal (1997 - 1999), and Elder L. A.
Wilson (1999 - present) .
3. The first permanent building was erected in 1912. Since
that tiime other renovations and additions followed in 1922 and
1942. In 1950, the present church building was erected. In 1992
Mount Moriah was chosen as one of the historic buildings in the
City of Fort Pierce and is recognized by the State of Florida as a
State Landmark.
4. In 1935, the church's first parsonage was built and paid
off in 1943; and in 1999 the present parsonage was purchased and
the mortgage was paid in full in January, 2006.
5. For 86 years services were held bi-monthly until 1997
when the church began having weekly worship services.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County
Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida that this Board does
hereby congratulate the Mount Moriah Primitive Baptist Church on
its 95th Anniversary.
