RESOLUTION NO. 06-200
A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH
OF MAY, 2006, AS "DRUG COURT MONTH"
IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida, has made the following determinations:
1. Drug Courts bring together criminal justice, treatment,
education, and other community partners in the fight against drug
abuse and drug abuse and drug-related crime, providing focus and
leadership for community anti-drug systems.
2. Drug Courts combine intensive judicial supervision,
mandatory substance abuse
treatment and drug-testing with
escalating sanctions and incentives to break the cycle of drug
addiction
and
concomitant
crime,
turning
defendants
into
productive, law-abiding members of our society.
3. Drug Courts save Floridians substantial taxpayer dollars
by reducing the number of incarcerated defendants.
4. The hard work and commitment of judges, prosecutors,
defense attorneys, treatment and rehabilitation professionals, law
enforcement and corrections personnel, researchers and educators,
national and community leaders, and others dedicated to the drug-
court movement have a profound impact on their communities.
5. The first Drug Court was established in Miami in 1989 and
serves as a model for Florida's 102 drug courts currently in
operation and 9 planned drug courts, as well as the more than 2,000
drug courts currently in operation or planning throughout the
nation and world.
6. National Drug Court Month recognizes the practitioners
and participants who make drug courts work and the significant
impact drug courts have in reducing drug usage and crime in
Florida.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County
Commissioners of SL Lucie County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby proclaim the Month of May, 2006,
as "DRUG COURT MONTH" in St. Lucie County, Florida.
2. This Board urges the citizens of St. Lucie County to
become more aware of the drug problem and recognize Drug Court
Month in St. Lucie County, Florida.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 13th day of June, 2006.
