HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-282 RESOLUTION NO. 06-282 A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING SEPTEMBER 22, 2006, AS NATIVE AMERICAN DAY IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. The geographic area of the United States of America was occupied by Native Americans prior to the existence of the formation of the United States of America, 2. The United States of America recognized the existence of Native Americans through treaties and other governmental documents. 3. The Cherokee Nation, duly formed in its constitution dated September 6, 1839, modeled its constitution from that of the United States of America. 4. Native Americans as a people have made significant contributions to the safety and prosperity of the United States of America by ceding their lands, the integration of their language, their service in the armed forces, and their commitment as citizens. 5. In 1962 the Senate and House of Representatives, in honor of the contributions of Native Americans resolved, under the Presidency of John F, Kennedy, that the fourth Friday of September be set aside as a state and federally recognized Native American Holiday. 6, On October 21, 2000 the Sumter Native American Family Tribe, Inc, Was duly formed in Sumter County, Florida to locally honor Native Americans through public education and cormnunity services, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Cormnissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby proclaim September 22, 2006 as "NATIVE AMERICAN DAY" in St. Lucie County, Florida. 2. This Board urges the citizens of St. Lucie County, Florida, to observe September 22, 2006 by celebrating the service of Native Americans to the United States of America and St. Lucie County, Florida.
