A RESOLUTION HONORING MR. HAVERT "COACH" FENN
WHO HAS BEEN CHOSEN AS "HISTORY MAKER" IN ST.
LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA, FOR EXEMPLIFYING
OUTSTANDING CITIZENSHIP THROUGH HIS MAJOR
CONTRIBUTIONS TO OUR COMMUNITY IN THE FIELD OF
EDUCATION AND GOVElWMENT
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida, has made the following determinations:
1. Mr. Havert "Coach" Fenn is a graduate of South Carolina
State University in 1950 and after serving in the U. S. Army during
the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1952, he graduated from the
University of Wisconsin. He taught and coached athletics in South
Carolina for ten years.
2. Havert "Coach" Fenn came to Fort pierce in 1962 and
taught in the St. Lucie County Schoo 1 System for twenty years,
retiring in 1982.
"Coach" Fenn served as a Fort pierce City
Official from 1972 - 1982 while still with the St. Lucie County
Schoo 1 System.
When he became St. Lucie County Commissioner in
1982, he retired from the School System.
He served as a County
Commissioner for fourteen years until he retired in 1996. "Coach"
Fenn was Chairman of the St. Lucie County Commission on three
separate occasions.
3. "Coach" Fenn, during his tenure as County Commission
Chairman in 1985 - 1986, was most instrumental in convincing the
New York Mets Baseball Team to agree to relocate their Spring
Training Camp to Port St. Lucie.
He served as President of the
Florida Association of County Commissioners in 1993-1994.
4. Our former Educator/Commissioner is an ex-athlete who
excelled in Football and Track at South Carolina State University
from 1945 to 1950 which still excelling in his classroom
curriculum.
He was inducted into the "South Carolina State
University Sports Hall of Fame" in 1998 in Football and Track. In
August, 2001, he was named South Carolina State University
"Alumnus-of-the-Year" and for the same year also named "Alumnus-of-
the-Year by South Carolina State University National Alumni
Association. He is presently serving his Second Term as President
of the Florida Gold Coast Chapter of the National Alumni
Association.
5. "Coach" Fenn has been married to Mrs. Lola Morgan Fenn of
Arcadia, Florida, for fifty-six years. He is the Father of three
sons, the Grandfather of nine children, and Great-Grandfather of
eleven children.
He is a member of the St. paul A.M.E. Church
where he serves on the Trustee Board and the Chairman of the Sons
of Allen Men's Society.
6. "Coach" Fenn spearheaded the effort to establish the St.
Lucie County Sports Hall of Fame in 1990. He was also inducted
into this same Hall of Fame in 1991. In 1996, the citizens of Fort
pierce named a Recreational Park - "the Havert 'Coach' Fenn Park"
in Honor of Our "Coach Fenn". He has served as Officer or Director
of so many 10cal State and National organizations that space
doesn't allow us to name all of them, Throughout the City, County
and across the State, he is still affectionately known as "Coach".
His accomplishments over these many years certainly supports him as
a true "History Maker".
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County
Commissioners of St. Lucie County:
1. This Board does hereby honor Mr, Havert "Coach" Fenn who
has been chosen as uHISTORY MAKER" in St. Lucie County, Florida,
for exemplifying outstanding citizenship through his major
contributions to our community in the field of education and
government.
2. This Board encourages the citizens of St. Lucie County to
participate in honoring Mr. Havert "Coach" Fenn at a dinner
celebration to be held in conjunction with the National Celebration
of Black History Month at the Pelican Yacht Club in Fort Pierce,
Florida, on Thursday evening, February 22, 2007, beginning at 6:30
p.m.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 20th day of February, 2007.
