HomeMy WebLinkAbout07-073 RESOLUTION NO. 07-073 A RESOLUTION HONORING MRS. QUEEN SOUTER TOWNSEND WHO HAS BEEN CHOSEN AS "HISTORY MAKER" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA, FOR EXEMPLIFYING OUTSTANDING CITIZENSHIP THROUGH HER MAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO OUR COMMUNITY IN THE FIELD OF EDUCATION WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. Mrs. Queen Souter Townsend is a Native Floridian. She was born in Marianna, Florida, and came to St. Lucie County from Dade County. She is one of four siblings who came from humble beginnings and has remained humble in spite of the many achievements along with the numerous recognitions she has received. 2. Mrs, Townsend is a First Generation College Graduate having received her B.A. Degree in Elementary Education from Florida Memorial College of St. Augustine, Florida; and her Masters Degree in Administration and Supervision from Florida International University of Miami, Florida. She completed advanced studies at the University of Maine and also Florida Atlantic University. 3. Mrs. Townsend began her career in St. Lucie County as an Elementary Classroom Teacher. She served the School Board in many capacities: Teacher, Administrative Assistant, Principal, Executive Director for Elementary Education, and Assistant Superintendent of School Programs and Curriculum, She served as Interim Superintendent while the Board searched for a new leader. Mrs. Townsend retired in June, 2001, as Associate Superintendent of Schools. 4. Mrs. Townsend has received numerous service awards and honors such as: Democratic Woman of the Year, Columbia Medical Cameo Woman of the Year for Education, Black History Achievement Award, Scouts of America Dedicated Service Award, and Resolutions from Florida Atlantic University and Indian River Community College. In 2005, then Governor Jeb Bush appointed Mrs. Townsend to the Children's Services Council of St. Lucie County. She is a Life Member and Past President of the Fort pierce Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and a Life Member of the National Association For the Advancement of Colored People. Mrs. Townsend remains a faithful and dedicated member of the Greater Mt. Pleasant primitive Baptist Church and serves as President of the Woman's Auxiliary of the East Florida primitive Baptist Association for ten years. 5. Mrs. Townsend is currently an Educational Consultant with the Florida Association of District Schoo 1 Superintendents and a professional partner with the Delta Project of the State Department of Education where she serves as Mentor for Practicing Principals, 6. Mrs. Townsend is the devoted wife of John Townsend, mother of Antella (Vernon Sr.) and Grandmother of Vernon, Jr. and Andre Jones of Miami, Florida. She is the First African/American to serve as Principal of a Schoo 1 in Port St. Lucie, the First African/American Woman to serve as Director of Elementary Schools in St. Lucie County, the First African/American Woman to serve as Associate Superintendent in St. Lucie County, and the First African/American Woman to be sworn in as a Superintendent of Schools in St. Lucie County. She is certainly a "History Maker". NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County: 1. This Board does hereby honor Mrs. Queen Souter Townsend who has been chosen as "HISTORY MAKER" in St. Lucie County, Florida, for exemplifying outstanding citizenship through her major contributions to our community in the field of education. 2. This Board encourages the citizens of St. Lucie County to participate in honoring Mrs. Queen Souter Townsend at a dinner celebration to be held in conjunction with the National Celebration of Black History Month at the pelican Yacht Club in Fort Pierce, Florida, on Thursday evening, February 22, 2007, beginning at 6:30 p.m, PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 20th day of February, 2007, ATTEST: COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COUNTY, LO DA APPROVED AS TO LEGAL FORM A.~ cow~ COUNTY Y
