LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. April is the month in which the Confederate States of American began and ended its four-year struggle for a sovereign and independent nation. 2. State Statute Chapter 683 sets aside April 26th as Confederate Memorial Day. 3. In proportion to its population, Florida contributed more soldiers and sailors to the Confederate services than any other state. 4. St. Lucie County was settled by these returning veterans, who became some of the first officers of the County court. 5. All Floridians should be knowledgeable of the history of the Civil War battles fought here, including Olustee and Natural Bridge. 6. We study the Civil War for the same reason we study all wars; to understand the historical events which compelled them, to learn together and seek to avoid future conflicts. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: This Board does hereby proclaim April 26, 2007 as "CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL DAY" in St. Lucie County, Florida.
