A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE FORT PIERCE
ALUMNAE CHAPTER OF DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY,
INC., FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS IN
HELPING TO CONQUER INJUSTICES AND FIGHTING FOR
THE PLIGHT OF ALL PEOPLE; AND FURTHER
PROCLAIMING OCTOBER 5, 2007, THROUGH OCTOBER
7, 2007, AS UTHE FORT PIERCE ALUMNAE CHAPTER
OF DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC. DAYS" IN
ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida, has made the following determinations:
1. On September 17, 1960, the Fort pierce Alumnae Chapter of
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
Incorporated was chartered and
consisted of thirteen (13) charter members.
2. Today, four (4) of the original thirteen (13) charter
members are still active in the chapter.
These members are
Jacquelyn A. Bush, Parolee Ellington, Arlena Benton Lee, and
Carolyn M. Smith.
3. As of June, 2000, there were more than one hundred (100)
Soros living in the tri-county areas of Indian River, Martin, and
St. Lucie Counties, with fifty-three (53) actively involved in the
running of the Fort pierce chapter.
4. Since its inception, the Fort pierce Alumnae Chapter of
Del ta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has been involved in numerous
public service programs in the tri-county area.
5. Some of these programs include the establishment and
funding of two classes for the mentally challenged in Fort pierce
(until the St. Lucie County School Board provided full funding a
few years later); presenting Fort pierce native, soprano Amelia
Scott in concert in 1976; a Delteen group with 50 young ladies on
the roster; Jabberwok; Mr. Ebony and Cotillion in Indian River
County; May Week; and cultural trips for area youth.
6, Throughout the years, the chapter has made contributions
to many United Way organizations such as The United Negro College
Fund, Sickle Cell Foundation, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of
America, the Salvation Army, and the American Lung Association, to
mention a few.
7. On the local level, the chapter has supported Habitat for
Humanity, Lincoln Park Community Library, Morgan Educational
Center, and the St. Lucie County Youth Hall. The chapter has also
awarded over $65,000.00 in Scholarships to graduating high school
seniors in the tri-county area.
8. This Board believes The Fort pierce Alumnae Chapter of
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. should be commended for their
outstanding contributions in helping to conquer injustices and
fighting for the plight of all people.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County
Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby commend The Fort pierce Alumnae
Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., for their outstanding
contributions ln helping to conquer injustices and fighting for the
plight of all people.
2. This Board does hereby further proclaim October 5, 2007,
through October 7, 2007, as "THE FORT PIERCE ALUMNAE CHAPTER OF
DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC. DAYS" in S t , Luc i e County,
Florida.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 25th day of September, 2007.
