HomeMy WebLinkAbout08-101 RESOLUTION NO. 08-101 A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING APRIL 7, 2008, THROUGH APRIL 12, 2008, AS "ST. LUCIE COUNTY AGRICULTURAL AWARENESS WEEK" WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. Due to hurricanes and other causes in 2004, the number of acres of commercial citrus dropped 31,987 acres from 82,987 acres to over 51,000 acres of commercial citrus. Known as the "Grapefruit Capital of the World", St. Lucie County is, and has been the foremost agricultural county on the Treasure Coast. 2. St. Lucie County still ranks 6th among the states' 67 counties in cash receipts with over $260 million annually. 3. St. Lucie County is a significant part of Florida's commercial horticulture industry. In 2005, the University of Florida/IFAS prepared a statewide economic study of the impact the Nursery & Landscape industry has on Florida. This study indicated the statewide impact was $15.2 billion. 4. In St. Lucie County there are over 90 nurseries and 900 landscape management companies. The total economic impact on St. Lucie County, when lawn and garden suppliers, retail plant establishments, and other allied green industry businesses are included, adds up to $224.3 million and provides 5,022 jobs. 5. Agricultural Awareness Week will feature information on agriculture's past and how this dynamic industry is transitioning to meet the needs of the future. Highlights of the week include history storytelling from some of St. Lucie County's longtime residents, radio and television spots, educational programs on a variety of topics, and speakers in libraries. 6. The week culminates with two big events: St. Lucie County Extension's annual event "Ag Tour", where busloads of passengers tour agriculturally prominent cattle, vegetable, horticultural, research, or other industries integral to the advancement of agriculture; as well as a Celebrity Chef Cook-Off at the Downtown Farmer's Market, a local favorite for over a decade. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby proclaim April 7, 2008, through April 12, 2008, as "ST. LUCIE COUNTY AGRICULTURAL AWARENESS WEEK" in St. Lucie County, Florida. 2. This Board urges the ci tizens of St. Lucie County and visitors alike, to participate in the many activities planned during the week of ST. LUCIE COUNTY AGRICULTURAL AWARENESS WEEK.
