HomeMy WebLinkAbout08-131 RESOLUTION NO. 08-131 A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE WEEK OF MAY 12, 2008, THROUGH MAY 17, 2008, AS "LAW ENFORCEMENT WEEK"; AND FURTHER DESIGNATING MAY 15, 2008, AS "LAW ENFORCEMENT MEMORIAL DAY" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. The Congress and the President of the United States have designated May 15, 2008, as Peace Officers' Memorial Day, and the week in which it falls as Law Enforcement Week. 2. The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office has been constituted by the State of Florida to uphold the laws and play an essential role in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the citizens of St. Lucie County. 3. It is important that all citizens know and understand the problems, duties, and responsibilities of their law enforcement agencies, and that members of our Sheriff's Office recognize their duty to serve the people by safeguarding life and property, by protecting them against violence or disorder, and by protecting the innocent against deception and the weak against oppression or intimidation. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby proclaim May 12, 2008, through May 17, 2008, as "LAW ENFORCEMENT WEEK" in St. Lucie County and call upon all citizens of St. Lucie County and upon all patriotic, civic, and educational organizations to observe that week with appropriate ceremonies in which all of our people may join in commemorating law enforcement and detention deputies, past and present, who by their faithful and loyal devotion to their responsibilities have rendered a dedicated service to their communities. 2. This Board does hereby further designate Thursday, May 15, 2008, as "LAW ENFORCEMENT MEMORIAL DAY" in honor of those peace officers who, through their courageous deeds, have lost their lives or have become disabled in the performance of their duty.
