RESOLUTION NO. 08-283
A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE CELEBRATION OF THE
MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY FESTIVAL TO BE HELD ON
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2008, AT THE ST. LUCIE
COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS; AND PROCLAIMING MONDAY,
SEPTEMBER 15, 2008, AS "MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE
DAY" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St, Lucie County,
Florida, has made the following determinations:
1. In the early hours of September 16, 1810, Miguel Hidalgo
Costilla, a priest in the small town of Dolores, rang the church
bell to gather the townspeople.
2, He called for the people of Mexico to rise up against the
Spanish Crown, thus initiating Mexico's War of Independence,
3, The country did not achieve independence until 1821, but
it is this event, known as the Grito de Dolores which is
commemorated every year in town sguares across Mexico.
4, The largest Independence Day celebration takes place in
Mexico City's Zocalo, which is decorated from the beginning of
September with red, white and green lights and flags,
5. On September 15th of each year, at 11: 00 p ,m, the President
of the Republic goes out onto the central balcony of the National
Palace, rings the bell (the same bell Hidalgo rang in 1810) and
shouts to the people gathered in the square below "Viva Mexico"!
The crowd responds "Viva"!
and fireworks light up the sky as the
crowd cheers.
6, The celebrations continue on the 16th wi th civic ceremonies
and parades - the largest taking place in Mexico City, but perhaps,
the most toucl:1ing festi vi ties are those in small communi ties in
which school children of all ages participate.
7. The Hispanic Media Group, in conjunction with Gigante
1330, has organized the 7th Anniversary Festival to be held on
Sunday, September 14, 2008, at the St, Lucie County Fairgrounds,
Local Mexican/Americans will celebrate this historical event of
their independence and the public is also invited to attend,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County
Commissioners of st. Lucie County, Florida:
1, This Board does hereby recognize the celebration of the
Mexican Independence Day Festival to be held on Sunday, September
14, 2008, at the St. Lucie County Fairgrounds; and does hereby
proclaim Monday, September 15, 2008, as uMexican Independence Day"
in St. Lucie County, Florida.
2. This Board urges the citizens of St. Lucie County,
Florida, to participate in this historical event,
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 9th day of September, 2008,
