A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE YOUTH LEADERSHIP
ST. LUCIE COUNCIL, WHO, WITH SUPPORT FROM THE
EXECUTIVE ROUNDTABLE OF ST. LUCIE COUNTY,
INDIAN RIVER STATE COLLEGE AND ST. LUCIE
COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS, ARE CONDUCTING THE
"KIDS FEEDING KIDS" STUDENT FOOD DRIVE FROM
SEPTEMBER 22, 2008, THROUGH NOVEMBER 1, 2008,
TO BENEFIT THE TREASURE COAST FOOD BANK IN ST.
LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, has made the following determinations:
1. The Student Food Drive, sponsored nationally by Tyson
Foods, is an effort conducted by High Schools in selected
communities across the United States to collect and donate food to
local food banks in the Feeding America nationwide food bank
network.
2. The mission of the uKids Feeding Kids" Student Food Drive
is to unite and empower St. Lucie County high school students in
the commitment to feed the hungry and to promote volunteerism.
3. In St. Lucie County, nearly 30,000 people or 13% of the
county's population, live in poverty.
St. Lucie County Schools
report that 60% of students qualify for free or reduced breakfasts
and lunches.
4. The food collected from the Student Food Drive will be
donated to the Treasure Coast Food Bank in Ft. Pierce. The food
will then be distributed to more than 160 different food pantries,
soup kitchens, shelters, day care centers and rehabilitation
centers.
Each month, hunger relief agencies supplied by the
Treasure Coast Food Bank serve 150,000 snacks and meals to the
needy as well as providing groceries to 40,000 people.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County
Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby commend the Youth Leadership St.
Lucie Council, who, with support from the Executive Roundtable of
St. Lucie County, Indian River State College and St. Lucie County
Public Schools, are conducting the "Kids Feeding Kids" Student Food
Drive from September 22, 2008, to November 1, 2008, to benefit the
Treasure Coast Food Bank in St. Lucie County, Florida.
2. This Board urges the citizens of St. Lucie County to
promote this worthwhile event by participating in the "Kids Feeding
Kids" Student Food Drive to be held from September 22, 2008, to
November 1, 2008, in St. Lucie County, Florida.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 16th day of September, 2008.
