HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-063 RESOLUTION NO. 09-063 A RESOLUTION STRONGLY PRESERVATION OF PUBLIC, GOVERNMENT CHANNELS . ENCOURAGING EDUCATIONAL, THE AND WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. The Federal Communications Commission has opened a case on whether to preserve Public, Educational, and Government (PEG) Channels in their current form. 2. Several cable television providers are attempting to make PEG channels hard to find (via several internet web page menus), hard to view (poor quality), hard on the wallet (requiring customers to pay to see them). 3. The FCC case combines a case filed by Dearborn/Meridian Township versus Comcast, where Comcast has tried to prove the PEG channels to a digital-only format in the 900 range, and a case filed by the City of Lansing versus AT&T that would provide PEG channels as only internet-style videos. 4. The FCC has opened a comment period ending March 9,2009 for any interested parties. 5. PEG channels in their current form are a valuable service. They keep the community informed about important issues and events. PEG channels make public meetings accessible to those who cannot physically attend them. PEG channels must remain free and accessible to ensure that residents of St. Lucie County can receive information about emergencies, view public hearings, and learn about government services. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby find that cable companies should be required to keep PEG channels in their current free and accessible form. 2. This Board authorizes the County Attorney to file this Resolution as a comment to the FCC's case on PEG channels. "'''l PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 3rd day of March, 2009.
