LUCIE COUNTY ENVIRONMENTAL LEARNING CENTER" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY~ FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has the following determinations: 1. The Children's Environmental Museum, an environmental educational facility loc~ 5400 N. E. St. James Drive, Port St. Lucie, Florida, held its ribbon cutting ceremony on O, 27, 2001. 2. The facility is located on a 220-acre preserve on the North Fork of the St. Lucie which was acquired through the St. Lucie County Environmentally Significant Lands progra the South Florida Water Management District Save Our Rivers program 3. While the property contains a mosaic of habitats, one of its finest features is the St. River itself. 4. The portion of the river along the boundary of the facility is situated at an old oxt the river, which was channelized, forming Idabelle Island. Oxbows are twists and tums thai in slow meandering rivers, like the St. Lucie, resulting in a broader floodplain and pro significant water storage and filtration, and important habitat for birds and other animals. 5. Naming the facility the Oxbow Eco-Center invites an instant opening to educate ~eople about the St. Lucie River. 7. This Board believes the Children's Environmental Museum should be renam~ the "Oxbow Eco-Center, a St. Lucie County Environmental Learn/rig Center", which is dedica d to environmental education programs that foster an awareness and appreciation of the natural x ford, provide an understanding of ecosystems and sustainability, and instill a sense of stewardship t{ ,ward Florida and all its inhabitants. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby rename the Children's Environmental Museum, located a~ ;400 N. E. St. James Drive, Port St. Lucie, Florida, to the "Oxbow Eco-Center, a St. Lucie C unty Environmental Learning Center" in St. Lucie County, Florida. 2. The County Administrator is hereby directed to notify the proper utilities, the U, S. i >ostal Service, the Property Appraiser, the Supervisor of Elections, the Sheriff of St. Lucie Court' y, the Road Department, the Acquisition Division of the County Attorney's Office and any other departments needed to make the necessary changes accordingly.
