A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2011 AS
"SICKLE CELL AWARENESS MONTH" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following
determinations:
1. Although this hereditary blood disorder predominantly affects Blacks and members of the
darker races, Sickle Cell is a global disease and affects persons of all backgrounds, nationalities and ethnicities.
2. Sickle Cell is the most common ofgenetic disorders; yet not many people actually know about
the disease.
3. Sickle Cell Foundation of Palm Beach County and Treasure Coast, Inc. (SCF) is a community-
based nonprofit, tax-exempt organization that seeks to improve the quality of life for persons with Sickle Cell
Disease or Sickle Cell Trait and members of their families.
4. In addition to education and community awareness, services include screening, counseling,
family support groups, normalization and socialization activities; providing information and education to
parents of newborns who test positive for Sickle Cell Trait.
5. The 8"' Annual Walk into a Smile and Health Fair will take place on September 17, 2011 at
Sandhill Crane Parkin Port St. Lucie. A series of professional development workshops on Exertional Sickling
will also be held on the Treasure Coast September 19-21, 2011.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida as
follows:
1. This Board does hereby proclaim the month of September 2011 as "SICKLE CELLAWARENESS
MONTH" in St. Lucie County, Florida.
2. This Board urgesthe citizens ofSt. Lucie Countyto attend these celebratory events and reflect
on the children and adults whose lives, education and careers have been affected by this disease.
