A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING JULY 2, 2012 THROUGH JULY 2, 2013 AS
"150`h ANNIVERSARY OF THE MORRILL ACT ESTABLISHING THE
AMERICAN LAND-GRANT SYSTEM AND THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA AS
FLORIDA'S 1862 LAND-GRANT UNIVERSITY IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY,
FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board ofCounty Commissioners ofSt. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following
determinations:
1. On July 2, 1862, one hundred fifty years ago, President Abraham Lincoln signed into law the
Morrill Act, which created a nationwide network of public universities know as land-grant
universities.
2. The University of Florida was the university designated to be the State of Florida's 1862 land-grant
university.
3. Land-grant universities democratized higher education in America and initially provided for the
teaching of agricultural science, engineering, and military tactics to improve the quality of
American education in these subjects.
4. In its role as a land-grant institution, the University of Florida has provided leadership in helping
the United States produce the safest and most plentiful food supply on earth.
5. University of Florida faculty members have made significant strides in establishing and advancing
the agricultural and natural resources sector as Florida's second-largest industry.
6. The University of Florida has made a tremendous impact on the lives of Floridians through its core
land-grant mission of research, teaching, and outreach.
7. The University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) is a federal, state,
and county partnership dedicated to developing knowledge of agriculture, human and natural
resources, and the life sciences and sharing it with Florida's citizenry.
8. This shared scientific knowledge and expertise enriches lives and enhances the state's economic
growth.
9. On July 2, 2012, Florida residents, along with millions of other Americans, will have benefitted
from 150 years of the land-grant vision.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby proclaim July 2, 2012 through July 2, 2013 as "150`h ANNIVERSARY OF THE
MORRILLACTCELEBRATINGFLORlDA'S LAND-GRANT UNIVERSITIES" in St. Lucie County, Florida.
2. This Board urges the citizens of St, Lucie County and visitors alike, to participate in the many
activities planned during the "150`h Anniversary ofthe Morrill Act Establishing the American Land-
Grant System and the University of Florida as Florida's 1862 Land-Grant University.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 2nd day of October, 2012.
