HomeMy WebLinkAbout12-166RESOLUTION NO. 12-166 A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING A COMMITMENT TO THE CONSERVATION OF NATIVE WILDFLOWERS IN NATURAL AREAS IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board ofCounty Commissioners ofSt. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. The natural beauty of native wildflowers in St. Lucie County, Florida can be enjoyed by everyone; can attract guests, and benefit commerce, environmental health, and public well-being. 2. The enjoyment of native wildflowers is an occasion for all County and community leaders to unite for the benefit of everyone. 3. Many naturally beautiful species of native wildflowers, including Coreopsis, the state wildflower, as depicted upon the State Wildflower license tag, are already prominently displayed in St. Lucie County's natural areas and along state and county roadways. 4. Increasing the visibility of native wildflowers in St. Lucie County is consistent with the vision of the Comprehensive Plan, and goals of many individuals, businesses, and community- based organizations. 5. The presence of native wildflowers is essential to the fitness of native pollinator species necessary for productive and profitable farms and forests. 6. In the spring of 1513, Juan Ponce de Leon named this beautiful place La Florida, Land of Flowers, because of the wealth of native wildflowers. It is desirable and attainable to experience the beauty of many more native wildflowers in St. Lucie County's natural areas and along state roadways. Community organizations such as the OF/IFAS St. Lucie County Cooperative Extension, the Florida Master Naturalists, the Treasure Coast Beekeepers Association and others are encouraged to undertake projects designed to conserve native wildflowers in St. Lucie County's natural areas and along state roadways. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, do hereby commit and encourage others to commit to the conservation of native wildflowers in natural areas and along state roadways. BE IF FURTHER RESOLVED that this Board hereby instructs County staff to partner with Florida Department of Transportation, when applicable, to plan and implement practices that will increase the visibility and enjoyment of Florida native wildflowers.
