HomeMy WebLinkAbout12-214RESOLUTION NO. 12-214 A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING NOVEMBER 14, 2012 AS WORLD DIABETES DAY AND PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2012 AS "NATIONAL DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH: INST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA Whereas, November is National Diabetes Awareness Month and November 14 was created as World Diabetes Day in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat that diabetes now poses; and, Whereas, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have indicated that someone new is diagnosed with diabetes every 17 seconds; and diabetes is responsible for more deaths annually than breast cancer and AIDS combined, taking a devastating financial, physical and emotional toll on our society; and Whereas, there are nearly 26 million children and adults in the US that are now living with diabetes and another 79 million are at high risk for developing the disease ;and Whereas, diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in the United States; Florida ranks in the top ten states with high diabetes rates, and diabetes is one of the top seven leading causes of death in St. Lucie County; and, Whereas, diabetes is projected to affect one in every three adults in the US by the Year 2050 unless we act to halt this progression; and Whereas, the fact that diabetes is increasingly striking younger persons and children is a disturbing trend that needs to be proactively addressed; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, that this Board does hereby proclaim the month of November 2012 as National Diabetes Awareness Month and the date of November 14 as World Diabetes Day in St. Lucie County. We hereby resolve to heighten diabetes awareness, advocacy and risk reduction by "Shining a Light on Diabetes"; and Therefore, the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners encourages all residents to manage and take charge of their health and lead healthy lifestyles, thereby reducing their risk of acquiring diabetes as well as preventing or delaying the onset of diabetic com plications,thereby enhancing their longevity, quality of life and productivity.
