LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA IS A "PURPLE HEART COUNTY" OF THE TREASURE COAST OF FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. St. Lucie County is located in the Treasure Coast of Florida and has always supported our Military Veteran population, now numbering nearly 30,000. 2. The Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration in use today, evolving from the Badge of Military Merit, created by General George Washington for the common soldier in 1782. 3. The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces that have been wounded or killed in combat with a declared enemy of the United States of America. 4. The mission of the Military Order of the Purple Heart is to foster an environment of goodwill among the combat wounded veteran and their families, promote patriotism, support legislative initiatives and most importantly, make certain that the community will never forget the service of our Veterans. 5. The Florida State Legislature designated August 7 as Purple Heart Day in perpetuity, in honor of the recipients. 6. St. Lucie County is honored to recognize the sacrifices Purple Heart recipients have made in defending our freedoms and believed that it is important to admire their courage and to show them the support they have earned.
