A RESOLUTION HONORING )ANE MURRAY BROOKS BY NAMING THE WEST
SIDE OF DOLLMAN PARK, WHICH WAS PURCHASED BY ST. LUCIE COUNTY
IN THE SAVE OUR COAST PROGRAM, ")ANE MURRAY BROOKS PARK" IN
RECOGNITION OF HER UNTIRING WORK AS A CONSERVATIONIST
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida,
has made the following determinations:
1. Jane Dickson Murray was born on September 7, 1927 in Lexington, Virginia.
She graduated from Duke University where she met John Brooks. They were married
in August of 1948 and moved to Fort Pierce immediately thereafter. She and John
had two daughters, four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
2. Ms. Brooks devoted over 40 years to educating herself and others about the
unique flora and fauna of St. Lucie County and the importance of preserving their
natural habitats for future generations to enjoy.
3. Over years of environmental activism, she was a founding member of the
Conservation Alliance of St. Lucie, president of the St. Lucie Audubon Society, board
member of the Florida Audubon Society, board member of the Florida Ornithological
Society, founding member and conservation chair of the Florida Native Plant Society
and president of the local chapter, board member of the Marine Resources Council,
chairman of the St. Lucie County Land Acquisition Selection Committee, and a
member of the St. Lucie County Environmental Advisory Committee.
4. In 1989, she fought to preserve the Dollman property on Hutchinson Island in
its natural state. She described it as a tropical maritime hammock unique for its
location. She cataloged the plant life exhaustively to support that description and the
preservation effort. Over the years she would say that "enlisting the support of a wide
variety of community members and organizations" to save Dollman was her proudest
accomplishment.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners

1. This Board does hereby honor Mrs. Jane Murray Brooks by naming the west
side of Dollman Park as ~~Jane Murray Brooks Park". A copy of this resolution shall be
