A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING SEPTEMBER 28, 2013, AS
"NATIONAL ESTUARIES DAY - HANDS ACROSS THE LAGOON"
IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board ofCounty Commissioners ofSt. Lucie County, Florida, has
made the following determinations:
1. St. Lucie County recognizes the environmental, transportation, economic and
overall quality of life benefits that the Indian River Lagoon provides to the Space
Coastregion.
2. The economic value of the Indian River ~agoon has been estimated at more
than $3.7 billion annually to our state and region.
3. The central and northern segments of the Indian River Lagoon have lost more
than 47,000 acres of vital sea grass habitat since 2011 from harmfui aigai
blooms.
4. Numerous manatees, dolphins and pelicans have died in the Indian River Lagoon
within the past year, resulting in the formal declaration of an unusual mortality
event.
5. The residents of St. Lucie County are becoming increasingly concerned about
the status of the Indian River Lagoon's water quality and overall health.
6. National Estuaries Day will be celebrated on September 28, 2013 to recognize
the importance that estuarine ecosystems serve as natural barriers to buffer
against storms and floods, absorb and store carbon and provide critical habitat
for commercial and recreationai fisheries.
7. The Indian River Lagoon Nationai Estuary Program and Marine Resources
Councii are working cooperatively with local and state governments,
organizations and stakeholders in St. Lucie County to organize a Hands Across
the Lagoon event on National Estuaries Day on September 28, 2013 so as to
give St. Lucie County residents an opportunity to demonstrate their support for
a restored and vibrant Indian River Lagoon by joining hands along selected
causeway bridges.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners
of St. Lucie County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby proclaim September 28, 2013 as "NATIONAL
ESTUARIES DAY - HANDS ACROSS THE LAGOON" in St. Lucie County, Fiorida.
