LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA, REQUESTING STAFF INITIATE AMENDMENTS TO THE GOALS, OBJECTIVES AND POLICIES FOR THE PORT OF FORT PIERCE MASTER PLAN TO CONSIDER POLICIES THAT WOULD PROVIDE FOR THE LOCATION OF A MARITIME ACADEMY AT THE PORT OF FORT PIERCE WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County recognizes the importance of the Port of Fort Pierce to the economy of St. Lucie County; and NOW THEREFORE, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida finds and determines: 1. Section 163.3178 (2)(k), Florida Statutes, requires all recognized deepwater ports in the State of Florida to prepare a master plan to be submitted to the appropriate local government for inclusion within that government's locally adopted comprehensive plan. 2. Since the Port Planning Area covered by this Master Plan includes property within the incorporated and unincorporated area of the County, the appropriate local government is St. Lucie County. 3. St. Lucie County is working in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation and the City of Fort Pierce to update the Master Plan for the Port of Fort Pierce. A community planning charrette was held on March 14, 2013 to develop a consensus plan for the future development of our Port. 4. The concept establishing a Maritime Academy at the Port of Fort Pierce received overwhelming support from citizens and elected officials alike. 5. St. Lucie County is very proud of the existing partnerships that have been created with our local Educational Institutions in the areas of Agricultural Research, Medical Research, Marine Research and Aquaculture. 6. In consideration of the anticipated growth to be experienced by Florida's 14 operational Seaports via the Panama Canal expansion, a Maritime Academy located at the Port of Fort Pierce would meet the need for enhanced maritime training. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby proclaim its support of a Maritime Academy at the Port of Fort Pierce. 2. The County Administrator is hereby directed to request that staff initiate amendments to the Port Master Plan to consider adopting policies that would provide for the location of a Maritime Academy at the Port of Fort Pierce.
