HomeMy WebLinkAbout13-225RESOLUTION NO. 13-225 A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2013 AS "ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH" INST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, degenerative brain disorder that causes loss of memory, impaired thinking, confusion, disorientation and death. 2. In the United States 5.4 million people have probable Alzheimer's disease, and 10% of these reside in Florida. 3. Nearly one million (1,000,000) Floridians are caring for someone with dementia. 4. More than four hundred fifty thousand (450,000) Floridians, aged 65 and over, have Alzheimer's disease or a related disorder, including seven thousand three hundred sixty- nine (7,369) in St. Lucie County. 5. About eighty (80%) percent of patients with Alzheimer's disease are cared for by family members. 6. Seventy (70%) percent of people with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias live at home, where they are cared for by family and friends. 7. It is important that the safety and well-being of our Alzheimer's families living in our local communities be preserved, as well as their dignity and quality of life, and that services and resources are accessible to all cultures. 8. This Board extends its gratitude to those advocates and service providers, including Alzheimer's Community Care and the Alzheimer's Association Southeast Florida Chapter, who provide vital care and support, value the need for dementia-specific care, and support Alzheimer's families, as well as a cure for Alzheimer's patients. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby proclaim the month of November 2013 as "ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH" in St. Lucie County, Florida. 2. This Board urges the citizens of St. Lucie County to learn more about Alzheimer's Disease and attend educational events that are free and open to the public during Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month in St. Lucie County, Florida.
