A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE 50T" ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF HPS, HELPING
PEOPLE SUCCEED, A NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION SERVING THE TREASURE COAST
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the
following determinations:
1. March 19 isthe official date ofthe founding of HPS, Helping People Succeed, a 501(c)3 non-
profit organization, offering programs and services for more than 4,500 families on the Treasure
Coast and Okeechobee County.
2. The organization opened its doors in 1964 at the former Coral Gardens Bowling Alley,
providing social and work skills for adults with disabilities to become part of the fabric of our
workforce by letting the community see our sons and daughters as capable people who want to
work, recreate and enjoy real lives with their families and friends. Helping People Succeed
expanded its programs and services during the last 50 years to now include such family-related
activities as Baby Steps, Healthy Families, and Music and Movement, joining Employment Options,
Community Connections and Behavioral Health Issues.
3. Helping People Succeed has recently developed a series of after-school programs for
students with autism spectrum disorder, counselingfortheir parents and families, arttherapy, and
yoga classes in order to improve social and communications skills for those young people.
4. Area artists have volunteered their time and talent for Helping People Succeed projects;
Foundations, underwriters and personal friends of Helping People Succeed have supported the
programs and services through grants and individual donations; the Children's Services Council and
the State of Florida through Vocational Rehabilitation, Healthy Families Florida, Florida KidCare,
Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) and the Department of Children and Families have
provided annual funding for Helping People Succeed.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED by the St. Lucie County Board of County
Commissioners that March 19, 2014 be recognized as the 50th Anniversary of Helping People
Succeed. A community picnic, recognition and awards program will be held at Indian Riverside
Park in Martin County on April 6, 2014. This Board commends Helping People Succeed, its
employees, volunteers and families for their continued good works in helping those citizens with
disabilities become taxpaying adults with job skills and community life skills and guiding families
to be free of abuse and to work toward a sustainable life style for families through Helping People
Succeed programs.
