A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING SEPTEMBER 19, 2014 AS
"MARY ELIZABETH DURBIN CARPENTER DAY" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
IN HONOR OF MS. CARPENTER'S 100T" BIRTHDAY
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made
the following determinations:
1. Mary Elizabeth Durbin Carpenter was born to the late Chester and Annie Mae Durbin,
on Saturday, September 19, 1914 in Memphis Tennessee. Mary Elizabeth married Amos Emery
"Carp" Carpenter in Louisville, Kentucky in May of 1941. The Carpenters moved to Fort Pierce,
Florida where Mary opened Mary's Donuts at 903 Avenue D, in the Durbin Grocery.
2. Mary and Carp have two daughters, Shirley Lynne Carpenter Rowland of Macon,
Georgia and Dolores "Jeannie" Carpenter Stark of Fort Pierce, Florida. She also has three
grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Mary is a mother and homemaker and devoted to
her church, Community United Methodist Church, where she has been a member since 1950.
She has enjoyed singing in the choir, working as a Sunday School teacher, and serving as Sunday
School Superintendent for over fifty years. Mary still attends the 8:30 a.m. services and takes
attendance of the Sunday School Books each Sunday. Mary also worked in the PTA throughout
her daughters' school years, where she served as President and as Homeroom Mother.
3. Mary is a lifetime member of the Fort Pierce Elkettes and Women of the Moose of Fort
Pierce. She is a member of the St. Lucie County Historical Society and enjoys the monthly
meetings. She has traveled to all fifty states including Hawaii, South America, Mexico and many
cruises to the Caribbean and is hoping to travel to Hawaii again. Mary loves to dance and has
won many trophies and awards in Ball Room Dance Competition.
4. Mary has been a strong leader in any task or organization in which she participates. She
loves children, family, friends, and her little Lhasa Apso "Chipper", who is her best buddy.
5. This Board believes Mary Elizabeth Durbin Carpenter should be recognized for her
outstanding and unselfish work for her family and St. Lucie County.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St
County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby proclaim September 19, 2014 as "MARY ELI
CARPENTER DAY" in St. Lucie County, Florida.
