LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. St. Lucie County is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our area. 2. Fire is a serious public safety concern, both locally and nationally, and homes are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire. 3. Home Fires killed more than 2,300 people in the United States in 2012, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and fire departments in the United States responded to 365,000 home fires. 4. Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home fires in half; and three out of five home fire deaths result from fires in properties with working smoke alarms and inone-fifth of all homes with smoke alarms, none were working. 5. When smoke alarms should have operated, but did not do so, it vvas usually because batteries were missing, disconnected, or dead. 6. Our residents should have smoke alarms and alert devices installed that meet the needs of people who are deaf or hard of hearing and the St. Lucie County Fire District has a smoke detector program designed to meet the needs of St. Lucie County residents in this regard. 7. The 2014 Fire Prevention Week theme, "Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month!" effectively serves to remind us that we need working smoke alarms to give us the time to get out safely. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1.
