HomeMy WebLinkAbout14-165RESOLUTION A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING OCTOBER 15, 2014 AS "NATIONAL LATINO AIDS AWARENESS DAY" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. The Florida Department of Health, Bureau of Communicable Diseases, observes "National Latino AIDS Awareness Day" every year on October 15. HIV continues to threaten the health of Hispanics/Latinos nationwide. This year the theme for National Latino AIDS Awareness Day is "To End AIDS Commit To Act" and act we must. 2. In Florida, the proportion of all newly reported adult HIV infection cases among Hispanics increased from 20% in 2004 to 26% in 2013. Despite making up only 23% of the population, Hispanics accounted for 20% of reported HIV infections in Florida. 3. In St. Lucie County, Hispanics represent 13% reported HIV infection cases. 4. National Latino AIDS Awareness Day is an occasion to address HIV and AIDS prevention, raise awareness and understand risk factors that affect Hispanics in our community. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby proclaim October 15, 2014 as "NATIONAL LATINO AIDS AWARENESS DAY" in St. Lucie County, Florida and urge all citizens to promote, organize and participate in related events.
