HomeMy WebLinkAbout15-025RESOLUTION NO. 15-025 A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE WEEK OF MARCH 21-28, 2015, AS "JAZZ APPRECIATION WEEK" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. The Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society has been steadily growing and contributing to the cultural enrichment of Fort Pierce and St. Lucie County through workshops, concerts, jazz jams, and special presentations of professional and renowned jazz and blues musicians. The mission of this non-profit organization is dedicated to enriching the artistic sensitivity of the Treasure Coast by furthering interest in America's unique original art form, Jazz, and its predecessor, Blues. 2. The Society has, among its myriad venues for communicating this interest, provided a weekly venue for Jazz and Blues entertainment attracting thousands of individuals to the downtown Fort Pierce area for weekly Jazz Jams at the Black Box Theatre. 3. The Society maintains an active school program of workshops and concerts free of charge to students in three Treasure Coast counties. Each year the Society awards $1,000 scholarships to qualified area high school students who desire to further their musical studies in college. 4. The Society stages the popular Sunday afternoon Waterside Blues Concerts at the Fort Pierce waterfront, absorbing all costs and making these well -attended attractions available to the public without charge. They present jazz ensembles at the weekly Jazz Craft Market, a fund development tool managed by the Society, which has grown to become a major attraction for Fort Pierce and which helps fund scholarships for students. They have staged parades for the City of Fort Pierce and provided various musical groups to area charities and non -profits at no charge, in an effort to attract visitors to the downtown Fort Pierce area and enhance cultural enrichment. 5. The week of March 21-28, 2015 is National Jazz Week and the Society will present an eight-day major undertaking to provide a variety of concerts and events likely to attract thousands of fans to St. Lucie County to attend the concerts and musical events, many of which are free. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners does hereby proclaim the week of March 21-28, 2015 as "Jazz Appreciation Week" in St. Lucie County, Florida and encourage all St. Lucie County residents to attend the concerts and musical events provided by the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society.
