A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF APRIL 2015 AS
"FAMILY MEALS' MONTH" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the
following determinations:
1. The use of illegal and prescription drugs and the abuse of alcohol and nicotine
constitute the greatest threats to the well-being of America's children.
2. Surveys conducted byThe National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse have
consistently found that children and teenagers who routinely eat dinner with their families are far
less likely to use illegal drugs, cigarettes and alcohol and are more likely to report excellent
relationships with their parents.
3. Teenagers who virtually never eat dinner with their families are 72 percent more
likely than the average teenager to use illegal drugs, alcohol and cigarettes.
4. The correlation between family dinners and reduced risk for teen substance abuse
is well documented.
5. Parental influence is known to be one of the most crucial factors in determiningthe
likelihood of substance abuse by teenagers.
6. Family dinners have long constituted a pillar of family life in America.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby proclaim the month of April 2015 as "FAMILY MEALS
MONTH" in St. Lucie County, Florida.
2. This Board urges the citizens of St. Lucie County to recognize and participate in this
worthwhile observance and take time to share a family meal with your children.
