LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA BY THE FLORIDA SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION AT THE FORT PIERCE WOMEN'S CLUB ON JANUARY 24, 2015 WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. The Liberty Tree (1646-1775) was a famous elm tree that stood in Boston, near Boston Common, in the days before the American Revolution. The Tree was a rallying point for the growing resistance to the rule of Britain over the American colonies. 2. In the years that followed, almost every American town had its own Liberty Tree - a living symbol of popular support for individual liberty and resistance to tyranny. In some locales a Liberty Pole, rather than a tree served the same political purpose. 3. When news of the Liberty Tree spread throughout the colonies, local patriots in each of the 13 colonies formed a Sons of Liberty group and identified a large tree or erected a pole to be used as a meeting place. In those times, holding an unauthorized assembly was dangerous business that carried threats of imprisonment of death. The casual appearance of a group chatting beneath a tree was much safer. 4. The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) was organized on April 30, 1889. The SAR was conceived as a fraternal and civic society composed of lineal descendants of the men who wintered at Valley Forge, signed the Declaration of Independence, fought in battles of the American Revolution, served in the Continental Congress, or otherwise supported the cause of American Independence. 5. The Fort Pierce Women's Club and the Fort Pierce Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution both had their 1001h Anniversary in 2014 and for that reason, the Florida Sons of the American Revolution (FLSSAR) feels it fitting that the first tree in St. Lucie County be in Fort Pierce. 6. The FLSSAR will be dedicating the first "Liberty Tree" in St. Lucie County at the Fort Pierce Women's Club on January 24, 2015. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby recognize the dedication of the first "Liberty Tree" in St. Lucie County, Florida and encourages all citizens of St. Lucie County to join in the festivities on January 24, 2015.
