HomeMy WebLinkAbout15-189RESOLUTION NO. 15-189 A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2015 AS "NATIVE PLANT MONTH" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. The Florida Native Plant Society began in the summer of 1980 in Winter Park, Florida by a group of scientists, educators and conservationists concerned about the loss of Florida's native plants and the introduction of non-native species overtaking natural areas. 2. The mission of the Florida Native Plant Society is the preservation, conservation and restoration of the native plants and native plant communities of Florida. 3. The Society now consists of 37 chapters and 3,500 members from all walks of life who volunteer their time, knowledge and skills in Land Management Reviews, raising moneyfor Conservation and Research Grants, Landscape Awards, restoration projects and teaching Floridians about the benefits of native plants. 4. St. Lucie County has an incredible wealth of natural areas to showcase Florida's native plants and native plant communities. 5. St. Lucie County hosts the OF/IFAS Hayslip Biological Control Research and Containment Laboratory, which makes it on the front line of controlling and ridding invasive species in Florida. 6. Lakela's Mint Chapter is the local chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society covering St. Lucie County. Lakela's mint is a Florida endemic and is restricted to sand scrub habitats found on ancient dunes formed along former ocean shorelines in Indian River and St. Lucie Counties NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby proclaim the month of October 2015 as "NATIVE PLANT MONTH" in St. Lucie County, Florida. PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 6th day of October 2015. BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ST.
