A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING DECEMBER 1, 2015, AS
"WORLD AIDS DAY" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS,the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the
following determinations:
1. The Florida Department of Health,Bureau of Communicable Diseases observes World AIDS
Day annually on December 1. HIV continues to threaten the health of Americans
nationwide.
2. As of 2013, Florida was the first in the nation for new HIV infections. An estimated total
of 126,000 Floridians or 15.8%of the national HIV prevalence figures are unaware of their
status.
3. As of September 2015, St. Lucie County had 68% of all cases of AIDS reported in Area 15
(Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties). Although St. Lucie County has
made great strides in reducing our rates of HIV infection, this is no time to let our guard
down. One out of eight Americans in the US who have HIV do not know it. For St. Lucie
County,this represents an estimated 35,000 individuals that are unaware of their status.
4. World AIDS Day is an opportunity to remember and support those that live with HIV/AIDS,
increase awareness, and celebrate the great strides in prevention and treatment made in
our country. Most importantly, we can remind our residents that HIV is not over and that
testing and prevention is the key.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby proclaim December 1, 2015 as "WORLD AIDS DAY" in St. Lucie
County, Florida.
2. This Board further urges all St. Lucie County citizens to take part in related events and
observances to increase awareness and understanding of HIV/AIDS as a global challenge,
recognizingthe important leadership role that can be played by people livingwith HIV/AIDS
and joining the global effort to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS in St. Lucie County, Florida.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 17th day of November 2015.
