HomeMy WebLinkAbout15-245 RESOLUTION NO. 15-245 A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING DECEMBER 13, 2015 AS "FEAST OF SANTA LUCIA DAY" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA THE 450TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE AREA FIRST BEING NAMED ST. LUCIE WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. Historians believe that the name "St. Lucie" was first applied to this area by the Spanish. Pedro Menendez de Aviles was sent to Florida to expel the French and secure the coast for Spain. Menendez settled in St.Augustine and traveled down the east coast of Florida. On the Feast Day of Santa Lucia, December 13, 1565,the Spanish built a fort and named the fort and new area Santa Lucia, the name which endures to this day for our county. 3. This year marks the 450r* anniversary of the naming of the area. On Sunday, December 6, 2015, the anniversary is acknowledged as the theme of the downtown Fort Pierce Christmas parade, with the Historical Society named as the Grand Marshall and local Slow Food volunteers costumed as Menendez, Spain's Queen Isabella & other characters of our local history. On December 12, 2015,the Inlet State park&Slow Food will host a celebration of the anniversary and the many cultures of our area, highlighted by local dance and language of many countries. 3. This year, the Feast Day of Santa Lucia, Saturday, December 13, 2015, will be hosted by the Treasure Coast Education and Research Development Authority on the site of the Sunshine Kitchen with a menu of a la carte foods that the Spanish found the natives of 1565 fished, hunted and gathered, as well as the myriad of foods the Spanish introduced to La Florida ... citrus, pigs, olive oil, chick peas and more. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby proclaim December 13, 2015, as"FEAST OF SANTA LUCIA DAY" in St. Lucie County, Florida. 2. This Board urges the citizens of St. Lucie County, and visitors alike, to join in the celebration on December 13, 2015. 3. This Board acknowledges our local history and urges residents and visitors to learn more about our diverse local history at the St. Lucie Regional Historical Museum and at monthly dinner presentations by the St. Lucie Historical Society. • PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 1 day of December, 2015. si EST: BOARD OF COUNTY Cw MISSIONERS ��� ~^'` ST.
