1. Historians believe that the name "St. Lucie" was first applied to this area by the Spanish.
Pedro Menendez de Aviles was sent to Florida to expel the French and secure the coast for
Spain. Menendez settled in St.Augustine and traveled down the east coast of Florida. On the
Feast Day of Santa Lucia, December 13, 1565,the Spanish built a fort and named the fort and
new area Santa Lucia, the name which endures to this day for our county.
3. This year marks the 450r* anniversary of the naming of the area. On Sunday, December 6,
2015, the anniversary is acknowledged as the theme of the downtown Fort Pierce Christmas
parade, with the Historical Society named as the Grand Marshall and local Slow Food
volunteers costumed as Menendez, Spain's Queen Isabella & other characters of our local
history. On December 12, 2015,the Inlet State park&Slow Food will host a celebration of the
anniversary and the many cultures of our area, highlighted by local dance and language of
many countries.
3. This year, the Feast Day of Santa Lucia, Saturday, December 13, 2015, will be hosted by the
Treasure Coast Education and Research Development Authority on the site of the Sunshine
Kitchen with a menu of a la carte foods that the Spanish found the natives of 1565 fished,
hunted and gathered, as well as the myriad of foods the Spanish introduced to La Florida ...
citrus, pigs, olive oil, chick peas and more.
