A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF JUNE 2016 AS
"GUN VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the
following determinations:
1. This Board expresses support for the designation of June as "National Gun Violence
Awareness Month" and calls on Congress to address gun violence.
2. Summer is the season with the highest rates of gun violence in the United States.
3. 100,000 Americans suffer gunshot wounds in the United States every year, and more than
300 Americans are injured from gun violence each day, resulting in 85 lives taken daily.
4. America has now suffered more than 60 shooting massacres over the past 30 years,
including 12 in 2012, including the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown,
Connecticut where 20 first graders and six educators were shot down.
5. America's schools and colleges remain vulnerable without enhanced school safety.
6. The large majority of Americans support requiring all gun buyers to pass a criminal
background check, no matter where they purchase the weapon or from whom they buy it.
7. It is necessaryto identify community based, state and national organizations with expertise
on gun violence to assist in development education and prevention workshops.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby proclaim the month of June 2016 as "GUN VIOLENCE AWARENESS
MONTH" in St. Lucie County, Florida.
2. This Board further believes that recognition of the month of June as Gun Violence
Awareness Month will provide an ongoing opportunity to educate residents on gun safety, foster
meaningful dialogue amongst the community about gun violence, and identify much-needed
solutions to gun related crimes and incidents in St. Lucie County, Florida.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 17th day of May 2016.
