A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING SEPTEMBER 5-11, 2016 AS
"MASTER GARDENER WEEK" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the
following determinations:
1. The St. Lucie Master Gardener volunteer program is an educational program offered
through the office of the St. Lucie County OF/IFAS Extension, and, through this program,
individuals are trained and certified in horticulture and related areas.
2. This model of volunteer service, emulated in all fifty states and numerous foreign
countries, was established in St. Lucie County in 1983.
3. There are 132 St. Lucie County Master Gardener volunteers who provided 20,996 hours of
service to county residents and served more than 53,715 residents in 2015.
4. The St. Lucie County Master Gardeners have provided $75,000 in college scholarships to
90 local high school students and full-time Indian River State College and Indian River
Research and Education Center undergraduate students.
5. These dedicated volunteer educators use their love of gardening to enhance natural
resources and environmental stewardship, improve health and wellness of St. Lucie County
residents, and create and sustain vibrant communities and urban neighborhoods.
6. The St. Lucie County Master Gardeners bring the latest horticultural information and
practices from the world of research to their communities' landscapes and gardens.
7. The St. Lucie County Master Gardener program sets a remarkable example of voluntary
community service by returning to St. Lucie County residents the equivalent of twelve full-
time employees.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby proclaim September 5-11, 2016 as "MASTER GARDENER
WEEK" in St. Lucie County, Florida and urges all county residents to join in this
special observance.
