A RESOLUTION HONORING THE "FRIENDS OF THE ST. LUCIE COUNTY
LIBRARY ASSOCIATION" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the
following determinations:
1. Over the thirty-six years that they have been in existence, the Friends of the St. Lucie
County Library Association (Friends) have stepped forward time and time again to ensure
that residents of St. Lucie County have access to quality Library service.
2. Over the years, the Friends have advocated for and supported library service for County
residents and have helped to save taxpayers money by providing funds for needed
equipment and services.
3. Their support has been varied and comprehensive. Over the years they have:
• funded the creation and hosting of the Library's original website;
• given scholarships to staff pursing library, technical and informational studies; and
• in 2011, all funds generated from their annual dinner were used to jumpstart the
Library's eBook collection, which last year had a robust 74,000 circulation.
4. Whenever the County has built a new branch library, the Friends have stepped forward in
a significant fashion. As the County has grown, so has their support.
• 1981- helped to fund the renovation of the Port St. Lucie Library;
• 1987 - Provided a $60,000 donation to furnish and equip the newly built Lakewood
Park Library;
• 1987 - Purchased the property on Avenue D and donated the parcel to the County
for the future Zora Neale Hurston Branch;
• 1997 - Provided a $40,000 donation for equipment and furniture for the
Morningside Branch;
• 2012 - Stepped forward with a $150,000 donation to help keep Hurston and Port
St. Lucie Branches open during the economic downturn; and
• Now with a branch scheduled to open in late summer 2017, the Friends are
donating $300,000 to help fund the new library's print and audio visual collection.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby honorthe Friends ofSt. Lucie County Library Association and thank
them for all their support and funding of St. Lucie County Libraries.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 1St day of November 2016.
