LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA URGING THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE TO REDUCE DUMPING OF POLLUTANTS INTO FLORIDA WATERS AND STOP THE USE OF OUR WATERWAYS AS AN UNHEALTHY DUMPING SITE WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. St. Lucie County strives to provide its citizens and visitors with clean water for all uses and activities. 2. The Florida Environmental Regulatory Commission (ERC), by a 3 to 2 vote, with two vacant Commissioner positions remaining unfilled, recently listed 39 toxins that can be legally dumped into state waters. 3. This further degradation of our waters from these toxins under the ERC recommendation increases the risk of cancer from 1 per 1,000,000 persons to 1 per 10,000 persons according to the documents presented. 4. Such an important health-related decision impacting all citizens in Florida must be made by elected officials in order to have full accountability. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board requests the Department of Environmental Protection or the Florida Cabinet to void this ERC recommendation that passed on a 3-2 vote and request the Florida legislature to pass legislation that will require a reduction of dumping of pollutants into Florida waters and stop the use of our waterways as an unhealthy dumping site. 2. The County Administrator is directed to send a copy of this resolution to the County's federal and state legislative delegation. PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 15th day November 2016.
