A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
URGING THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE TO REDUCE DUMPING OF POLLUTANTS INTO FLORIDA
WATERS AND STOP THE USE OF OUR WATERWAYS AS AN UNHEALTHY DUMPING SITE
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the
following determinations:
1. St. Lucie County strives to provide its citizens and visitors with clean water for all uses and
activities.
2. The Florida Environmental Regulatory Commission (ERC), by a 3 to 2 vote, with two vacant
Commissioner positions remaining unfilled, recently listed 39 toxins that can be legally
dumped into state waters.
3. This further degradation of our waters from these toxins under the ERC recommendation
increases the risk of cancer from 1 per 1,000,000 persons to 1 per 10,000 persons
according to the documents presented.
4. Such an important health-related decision impacting all citizens in Florida must be made
by elected officials in order to have full accountability.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida:
1. This Board requests the Department of Environmental Protection or the Florida Cabinet
to void this ERC recommendation that passed on a 3-2 vote and request the Florida
legislature to pass legislation that will require a reduction of dumping of pollutants into
Florida waters and stop the use of our waterways as an unhealthy dumping site.
2. The County Administrator is directed to send a copy of this resolution to the County's
federal and state legislative delegation.
