HomeMy WebLinkAbout16-199RESOLUTION NO. 16-199 A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING NOVEMBER 18 AND 19, 2016 AS "BUDDY BEAR WEEKEND" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. The First Annual Buddy Bear Weekend is a two-day event that will be held at the City of Port St. Lucie Civic Center on November 18th and November 19th. It is a tri -county community involvement and participation event designed to collect brand new stuffed teddy bears for children in trauma. 2. Police, Fire, EMS and other First Responders, upon arriving at the scene that involves a young child, gives that child a new teddy bear to help that child focus on the teddy bear rather than the problem at hand. There are thousands of children every year facing a situation of a parent being killed, a fire, an auto accident involving injury to a child, a domestic violence situation and other incidents that have traumatized little children each and every year. Buddy Bear Weekend will raise the awareness of what we can do in our own small way to help all responders provide some peace and joy to these innocent children during these traumatic times. 3. Buddy Bear Weekend is an educational, heart -felt and fun -filled event that will house quality information and inter -active programs for children, parents and schools regarding child safety, literacy & education, health & fitness and saving our earth [Going Green]. 4. The Buddy Bear Den will be the place to go ... all 17,000 square feet of educational fun and entertainment. Smokey Bear will be there and Smokey's handler will explain how important it is for children to learn about and help prevent Florida Wildfires. Also Smokey Bearand his handlerwill show the children what to do to be safe during a camping trip. There will be many other special guests and programs in the Buddy Bear Den, including national and local children's authors, cool fire trucks, police, fire, sheriff's departments , the post office, city, county, state officials, bounce houses, story time, book signings, child ID program, safety checks on car seats, backyard swimming safety tips and more. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby proclaim November 18 and 19, 2016 as "BUDDY BEAR WEEKEND" in St. Lucie County, Florida. 2. This Board encourages county residents to attend this two-day event at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center on November 18 and 19, 2016. PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 15`h day of November 2016.
