A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING DECEMBER 13, 2016 AS
"FEAST OF SANTA LUCIA DAY" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the
following determinations:
1. Historians believe that the name "St. Lucie" was first applied to this area by the Spanish.
Pedro Menendez de Aviles was sent to Florida to expel the French and secure the coast for
Spain. Menendez settled in St. Augustine and traveled down the east coast of Florida. On the
Feast Day of Santa Lucia, December 13, 1565, the Spanish built a fort and named the fort and
new area Santa Lucia, the name which endures to this day for our county.
2. On December 11, 2016, the Sailfish Brewery will co -host the celebration with the Gold &
Treasure Coast chapter of Slow Food. Sailfish has made a special brew from locally grown
pumpkin, which historians have identified as growing wild in our area when the Spanish first
trekked into our neighborhood on the Feast Day of Santa Lucia. Food known to be introduced
to Florida by the Spanish and foods known to be introduced to the Spanish by the Native
Floridians will comprise the menu available.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby proclaim December 13, 2016, as "FEAST OF SANTA LUCIA DAY" in St.
Lucie County, Florida.
2. This Board urges the citizens of St. Lucie County, and visitors alike, to join in the celebration
on December 11, 2016.
3. This Board acknowledges our local history and urges residents and visitors to learn more
about our diverse local history at the St. Lucie Regional Historical Museum and at monthly
dinner presentations by the St. Lucie Historical Society.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 6th day of December, 2016.
