HomeMy WebLinkAbout17-007RESOLUTION A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE WEEK OF JANUARY 23-27, 2017 AS "SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. Each year, St. Lucie County residents face the threat of severe weather events such as tornadoes, thunderstorms, flooding, extreme temperatures, lightning, and hurricanes, all with potential impact to life and property. 2. Growth in County population increases the potential death and destruction caused by severe weather. 3. 28 Florida residents lost their lives and 81 were injured due to severe weather in 2015. 4. Severe weather caused $27 million in damage in Florida in 2015. 5. It is vital that a preparedness campaign educate and provide effective public outreach programs that highlight all types of severe weather risks to residents and visitors in St. Lucie County. 6. The St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners is committed to educating St. Lucie County residents and visitors about severe weather preparedness so that they may better prepare themselves, their families and their businesses. 7. Increased awareness can help citizens and visitors understand the importance of emergency preparedness and provide them with the tools necessary to be prepared in an emergency. 8. The St. Lucie County Commission appreciates the outreach efforts of SAFER St. Lucie and its twenty-seven partner agencies in raising awareness about the importance of being prepared for severe weather. 9. The Florida Department of Emergency Management has designated January 23-27, 2017 as Severe Weather Awareness Week in the State of Florida. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby proclaim the week of January 23-27, 2017, as "SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK" in St. Lucie County, Florida. 2. This Board encourages all residents and visitors to contact SAFER St. Lucie to receive disaster preparedness education. PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 24th day of January 2017.
