A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF APRIL 2017 AS
"EARTH MONTH" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the
following determinations:
1. A healthy environment is the cornerstone of a thriving community and vigorous
local economy. State and local communities can lead the way in taking such steps to protect and
preserve our natural resources by encouraging sustainable energy and water consumption, land -
use, transportation practices, and waste reduction.
3. St. Lucie County, as reflected in its mission statement, strategic objectives and
conservation initiatives, values its natural resources as an integral part of its authentic identity.
4. While awareness and celebration of natural resources are part of our community
fabric every day, Earth Day offers citizens a unique opportunityto make a commitment to personal
practices that will be vital in protecting the quality of human and other life for generations to
come.
5. During the month of April, there are numerous opportunities for citizens to learn
about natural resources and take action to help protect them, including the Keep Ft. Pierce
Beautiful and Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful clean up days on April 1 and April 22 respectively,
OysterFest on April 1 and 2; Coast Guard Auxiliary (Flotilla 58) 75th Anniversary Open House on
April 8; the Chimp-a-thon 16K run on April 9; and numerous hikes and programs hosted on County
preserves throughout the month.
6. The County, along with the City of Ft. Pierce and the City of Port St. Lucie, are
hosting the 13" Annual Earth Day Festival at the Oxbow Eco -Center on April 29, 2017 from 10am
to 3pm.
7. Achievingthe County's strategic vision will require continued leadership and actions
on environmental issues, and the celebration of Earth Month promotes and serves this end
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby proclaim the month of April 2017 as "EARTH MONTH" in
St. Lucie County, Florida.
2. This Board does encourage all citizens to use this month to learn about the
environment and actions they can take to protect and celebrate these resources.
