A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING SUSAN BROOM KILMER FOR HER MANY CONTRIBUTIONS TO
THE LIBRARY SYSTEMS IN OUR COMMUNITIES THROUGHOUT HER 22 YEAR CAREER AS
LIBRARY DIRECTOR IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA AND RENAMING THE FORT PIERCE
BRANCH LIBRARY AS THE SUSAN BROOM KILMER BRANCH LIBRARY IN HER HONOR
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the
following determinations:
1. Susan Broom Kilmer was St. Lucie County 's Library Director for twenty-two years from
1988 through 2010. Prior to that she served as the Library's Assistant Director and was hired in
1977 as the Children's Librarian, working for St. Lucie County for a total of 33 years.
2. During Ms. Kilmer's leadership as the Library Director, the Lakewood Park, Hurston,
Morningside and Fort Pierce Branch Libraries were built. The Fort Pierce Branch Library was a
collaborative project with the City of Fort Pierce and the plan was that this new and very beautiful
building would anchor the downtown area. Ms. Kilmer closely oversaw the myriad details of this
construction and when it opened in July of 1999, she considered it her greatest hour.
3. Ms. Kilmer was a tireless advocate for Library service and literacy in St. Lucie County. She
was active on many Community groups and Boards, including Learn to Read, the Boys and Girls
Club, and Main Street, Fort Pierce.
4. In 1995, Ms. Kilmer worked with Indian River State College on an agreement to form a joint
use Library on the College's campus in St. Lucie West. St. Lucie County is still in partnership with
the college and operating this library.
5. Ms. Kilmer's contributions to the literacy of our communities, throughout her 33 year
career in the Library System of St. Lucie County are immeasurable. Due to the untiring dedication
of Susan Broom Kilmer to St. Lucie County, this Board believes that a tribute should be given in her
honor.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, in a meeting assembled this 2nd day May, 2017, the
Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, does hereby honor Susan Broom
Kilmer for her many contributions to St. Lucie County by dedicating and renaming the Fort Pierce
Branch Library building at 101 Melody Lane in Fort Pierce as the "Susan Broom Kilmer Branch
Library" in St. Lucie County, Florida.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida that this Board does hereby recognize and appreciate the passion and leadership
of Susan Broom Kilmer in St. Lucie County, Florida.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 2nd day of May 2017.
