HomeMy WebLinkAbout17-087RESOLUTION A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING MAY 7, 2017 THROUGH MAY 13, 2017 AS "TRAVEL AND TOURISM WEEK" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. Travel to and within the United States provides significant economic benefits for the nation, generating more than $2.1 trillion in economic output in 2015, with $947.1 billion spent directly by travelers. 2. Travel is among the largest private -sector employers in the United States, supporting 15.1 million jobs in 2015, including 8.1 million directly in the travel industry and 6.9 million in other industries. 3. Travelers' spending directly generated tax revenues of $147.9 billion for federal, state and local governments, funds used to support essential services and programs. 4. Tourism is the State of Florida's number one industry, responsible for welcoming 112.8 million visitors in 2016 and employing 1.4 million Floridians. 5. St. Lucie County Tourism experienced an 8.5 percent increase in tourist tax revenue in 2016, compared to the previous record-breaking year, bringing in more than $3.69 million in tourist tax revenue. 6. Travel contributes to personal growth, health, professional advancement, education, cultural understanding and the enhancement of America's image around the world. 7. Travel can serve as a catalyst to help move the national and local economy forward. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby proclaim May 7-13, 2017 as "TRAVEL AND TOURISM WEEK" in St. Lucie County, Florida and urge the citizens of St. Lucie County to join in this special observance with appropriate events, commemorations and festivals.
